Kelly T. Wilfert, J.D. is a Farm Management Outreach Specialist with a focus on legal issues impacting farms, agribusinesses, and rural communities. Kelly grew up on a 700-acre farm in northeastern Wisconsin raising fresh market fruits and vegetables, cash grain, and processing vegetables before pursuing a B.S. in Agriculture and Applied Economics from UW-Madison and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Prior to joining Extension, she assisted farm, business, and banking clients with a variety of legal issues including entity formation, contracts, real estate, limiting liability, regulatory compliance, farm transfers, farm succession, and estate planning. Kelly is licensed to practice law in the state of Wisconsin and is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the American Agricultural Law Association. She has been featured by RFD-TV, Midwest Farm Weekly, the Fabulous Farm Babe, Agri-View, the Wisconsin State Farmer, and many other media outlets, and has spoken to thousands of farmers and agriculturists about legal risk in farm operations.

Unsure where to start thinking about farm succession? In this presentation, Kelly T. Wilfert, J.D. will explain the legal risks of failing to plan and provide clarity around the legal topics of intestacy, probate, estate tax, and long term care. Participants will analyze their individual situation and create a short script to help express their concerns to a legal professional.
