Carrie Backman is the Assistant Director of Badger Precollege Arts Programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the Program Director for Summer Music Clinic, Summer Arts Clinic, Mini Music Clinics, and the Odyssey Junior Music Program. She is also a music professor at Edgewood University.
Carrie has taught music grades 5 through higher education in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Backman is the recipient of a College Band Directors National Association “Women in Conducting” Award, is a recipient of the Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship for excellence in teaching, a finalist for the Northwestern University Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Madison Area Music Association Music Teacher of the Year.
Backman received her B.M. in Music Education with a focus in euphonium performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, her Masters of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, and has pursued advanced level wind band conducting and is a PhD student in Curriculum and Instruction at UW-Madison.

Summer Music Clinic - a long-lasting impact on Wisconsin
Starting in 1929, Summer Music Clinic is the second oldest music camp in the USA. Encompassing the Wisconsin Idea, the mission of SMC is to be a true “clinic” for teachers, students, community, pre-service educators, and all to come and learn and grow together during an immersive arts experience.
