Immerse yourself in the vibrant pulse of the World Percussion Ensemble at UW–Madison—a group dedicated to celebrating the rich tapestry of percussive traditions from across the globe. Led by Professor Anthony Di Sanza and Tom Ross, the ensemble explores styles from Brazil, India, the Middle East, Cuba, and beyond through performance, cultural research, and deep listening. Rooted in the oral tradition, with only occasional use of written notation, the ensemble learns and shares music as it’s been passed down for generations—by ear, by heart, and by community. With a commitment to presenting works in both traditional folkloric and contemporary settings, the group brings authenticity and artistry to every stage they grace.
Winner of the 2010 Percussive Arts Society International World Percussion Ensemble Competition, the ensemble has performed regularly throughout the Upper Midwest, and has performed internationally, including Valencia, Spain in 2024 as well as Shenyang and Beijing, China in 2015.
In this program, they will delight audiences with 45 to 60 minutes of music from a recent or upcoming concert. There is also an opportunity for informal interaction with the performers after the concert.
