Carsyn has served as the curator for the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) since 2018. Overseeing more than 125 miles of rock core, 12,000 individual sets of water well cuttings, and over 15,000 hand samples and related documentation, Carsyn spends her time working with the collections in various capacities. Often, Carsyn can be found making efforts to better organize and preserve samples for their future use in WGNHS projects and beyond. She earned her M.S. in Geology at the University of Iowa after growing up in the upstate of South Carolina, and attending the University of South Carolina for her B.S.

The Rock Library of WI
From the 2,000 drillholes throughout the state, to 2 million feet of water-well cuttings, and 15,000 hand samples, the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) curates and preserves a vast archive of geologic materials from around the state. This presentation covers the diverse collections and highlights recent WGNHS work that utilizes the collections.
Early Geologic Mapping and WGNHS Collections from Northern Wisconsin
The WGNHS hand sample, thin section, and field notebook collections going back 130 years have been thoughtfully archived through a series of recent projects. These collections paint a detailed picture of the work undertaken by early geologists to evaluate natural resources and geology in northern WI counties. This presentation describes the early twentieth century work and touches on our modern understanding of the geology of northern Wisconsin (centered on Iron and Florence Counties) and the Lake Superior region.
