My research, education, and outreach programs focus on integrating sensing technologies and models, including artificial intelligence, to improve the understanding of terrestrial water, carbon, nutrient, and energy cycles and sustainable natural resources management under climate change and human activities.

My long-running interests have been genetics broadly, and the genetic basis for variation in reproduction and health in cattle specifically. Particular areas of interest include genetics of twin birth and susceptibility to the pathogen responsible for Johne’s disease. Current aim of work in my lab has is identification of specific DNA sequence changes causing variation in these traits.

Licheng Liu

Licheng Liu is a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who develops AI models guided by scientific knowledge to better understand and predict how ecosystems work. His research spans agricultural systems, watersheds, and wetlands, using satellite data and crop and Earth system models to track carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles across landscapes. He has published in journals including Nature Communications, Global Change Biology, and Remote Sensing of Environment. His goal is to turn complex environmental data into practical tools that support farmers, land managers, and communities making decisions about food production, water quality, and natural resources.

Talks can also be offered in Chinese (Mandarin).

Douglas Reinemann

Douglas Reinemann is proud to call Sheboygan his hometown and to have found a place at the University of Wisconsin, where the boundaries of the University are the boundaries of the state. His work as a Professor has given him the opportunity to see a world of ideas and places to bring back to the place he calls home.

John Shutske

John Shutske is a professor and Cooperative Extension Specialist at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in Biological Systems Engineering. Professor Shutske has 32 years of experience working as a partner with the agricultural community, Extension educators, health professionals, engineers, and agribusiness leaders. His work has focused on agricultural health, safety, and risk control and communication. John’s research and work in the past two years has focused on issues of airborne hazards in the farm workplace; stress, distraction, decision-making, and impacts of stress on health and injury risk; and, examining the possible role of agricultural workers in the spread of antibiotic resistance risk in the human population. In addition to his faculty role in Biological Systems Engineering, Shutske holds an affiliate Professor appointment in UW-Madison’s Family Practice Department in the School of Medicine and Public Health and works with students in the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine.

Tom Zinnen

Tom Zinnen was a Biotechnology Extension Specialist between 1991 and 2024. He also served as a Congressional Science Fellow in 2000–2001, and he was on loan to the National Science Foundation from 2008 to 2010 as a speechwriter for the NSF Director. He led BioTrek, the public outreach program of the Biotech Center and of the Division of Extension/Wisconsin 4-H. He was the emcee of the “Wednesday Nite @ The Lab” public science series on PBS Wisconsin. His favorite role is welcoming Wisconsinites to come experience science as exploring the unknown at their public, land-grant research university.
