Eliceiri is also a member of the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics, the UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) and the McPherson Eye Research Institute. He is also an affiliate investigator of the Morgridge Institute for Research focusing on the development of Medical Devices. Eliceiri’s research focuses on biophotonics, the use of light to investigate biological phenomena and bio-image informatics, the application of computational techniques to analyze and process bioimages. He collaborates with investigators around the world on the development and application of optical and computational methods to study a range of biological processes including cancer progression and stem cell differentiation. A major emphasis of current research is the developing of advanced imaging methods for the improved detection and characterization of cancer invasion and progression.

In 2004 she became faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where today she is the Director of the Preclinical Parkinson’s Research Program at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, and a Professor of Medical Physics. Dr. Emborg’s research focuses in developing comprehensive nonhuman primate models of neurodegenerative disorders, gene and cell-based therapies and the development of conceptual frameworks for ethical clinical translation of novel treatments. She is a UK Parkinson’s College Expert, a director of the Board of the National Association for Biomedical Research, and past-President of the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair. Her scientific honors include being the recipient of the 2016 Bernard Sanberg Memorial Award for Brain Repair, the 2021 University of Wisconsin Kellett Mid-career Award and the 2022 election to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows.

Aviad Hai https://badgertalks.wisc.edu/speaker/aviad-hai/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 15:57:22 +0000 https://badgertalks.wisc.edu/?post_type=speaker&p=3768 Dr. Aviad Hai is a neuroengineer and a neuroscientist whose work focuses on developing implantable and injectable sensors for accessing the entire nervous system—towards achieving a broader understanding of brain function. In 2019, Dr. Hai joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant professor, where his group is developing cutting edge electrical, magnetic, and electromagnetic sensors for large-scale recording and stimulation of brain activity. Dr. Hai received his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he pioneered nano-scale devices for recording of neuronal intracellular signals under the guidance of Prof. Micha Spira (neurobiology) and Prof. Joseph Shappir (Electrical Engineering). He later joined the department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he developed wireless implantable sensors that detect electromagnetic fields in the brain, and molecular technologies for direct imaging of neurotransmitter dynamics across large volumes of the brain with Prof. Alan Jasanoff (Biological Engineering). Dr. Hai is the recipient of the NIH NINDS 2020 office of the director’s New innovator award (DP2), the NIBIB Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01), a long-term fellowship from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and a fellowship from the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences.

He received his Ph. D. degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University from 2014-2018. Before he joined UW-Madison, he was a postdoc associate at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2018-2020. Dr. Hu is currently serving as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanobiotechnology and Young Star Editor for Nano Research. He has published more than 80 research papers, including Nature Biomedical Engineering, Science Translational Medicine, Science Advances and Nature Communications, with over 10,000 citations. Dr. Hu is recognized as the UW-Madison Early Career Young Innovator, 2023 Controlled Release Society (CRS) Immuno Delivery Focus Group Young Investigator, 2023 BMES-CMBE Rising Star Junior Faculty, 2023 Journal of Nanobiotechnology Rising Star, 2022 iCANX Young Scientist, 2022 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers, 2022 Badger Challenge Scholar, The World’s Top 2% Scientists (since 2019), 2022 Emerging Investigator in the Journal of Materials Chemistry B, Finalist of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Innovation Award, etc., and won METAvivor Foundation Early Career Investigator Award, 2022 Fall Research Competition Award from VCRGE at UW-Madison, Outstanding Editor Award for Journal of Nanobiotechnology, BMES Career Development Award, etc.

Brian Pfleger https://badgertalks.wisc.edu/speaker/brian-pfleger/ Fri, 20 Oct 2017 21:32:37 +0000 https://badgertalks.wisc.edu/?post_type=speaker&p=783 Brian received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 2000. and earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2005 from the University of California-Berkeley under the supervision of Jay Keasling. Brian’s thesis research focused on developing methods of controlling gene expression in bacteria that could be applied to enhancing the biosynthesis of pharmaceuticals. After graduating, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of David Sherman at the University of Michigan, where he studied how six Bacillus anthracis enzymes assemble a natural product essential for iron acquisition and pathogenesis. Brian is currently the Walter J. and Cecile Hunt-Hougen Faculty Scholar and Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering with appointments in Biomedical Engineering, the Microbiology Doctoral Training Program, and the graduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology. Brian’s research has been recognized with young investigator awards from 3M, NSF (CAREER), DOE (Early Career), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR-YIP), Biotechnology and Bioengineering (Daniel IC Wang Award), the Vilas Trust (Early Career and Vilas Associate Awards) and Purdue University (Mellichamp lectureship). Brian also received the Benjamin Smith Reynolds teaching award from the UW-Madison College of Engineering for his efforts to introduce undergraduates to biotechnology.
